Here’s some shots of my road trip across the country from Los Angeles to Boston. Some highlights were:

1. Yolo-stone (Yellowstone). Beautiful. Ol’ Faithful was definitely a sight, but making fun of all the tourists (yeah, I was one of them) waiting for the water to spit was a more entertaining view. A ton of buffalo/ bison crossed our path on our way out of the park.

2. Getting caught in the scariest, strongest, craziest storm in the Badlands. The winds were so terrifyingly strong that the poles to our already tied/ weighed down tent was bending inwards until it touched our noses as we slept.

3. Swimming in the warm waters of Lake Huron at night. It was a wonderful unexpected detour! I highly recommend staying at Lakeport State Park towards the end of the summer.

4. Stepping into all 5 great lakes!

5. Making peanut butter chocolate chip marshmallow tortilla sandwiches and watching Nick and Geoff try to eat them.

I’ve hidden pictures of my living situation long enough,...

I’ve hidden pictures of my living situation long enough, so here they are. But, shhhh! It’s still a secret.

Since last year, Chani, my roommate, and I had plans for building a second floor (at times we wanted three floors) when we landed a high-ceiling room during room draw. The room was perfect! Lots of room for sleeping on top and working on the bottom. Plus, there’s a ton of tile space for “water” pong.

After bringing the structure up and down and up again, it took around two months to finally finish it. The whole hallway had to be patient as most of our furniture lined the hallway during construction. But it’s finally done, and the wood block pizza was delicious.

“YouTV”

This was my first experience with rapid prototyping and polymers. My team quickly learned the limitations of 3D printing. Several of the parts were not strong, and we had to make many modifications and adjustments. The pulley guards for the suspended pulley tree worked well, but we had to insert dowel pins through the pulleys because they would pop under the high force exerted from the cables. Overall, the first prototype worked very well and was able to pick up several objects.

The assignment was to create a robotic hand so that it may pick up various items. We were given only one motor and each prototype will have a specific design based on its materials and method of manufacturing.

This is the first prototype, which had been submitted to be 3-D printed. Polymers will be placed along the finger segments to enhance grip. The next prototype will be created from sheet metal and plywood, and the final prototype will be a combination of materials.

Our team decided to have the specific challenge to design our hand so that it is able to not only pick up items, but also open the tab of a soda can. I was put in charge of the design of the lever, which is quite challenging considering the fact that we are provided with only one lever. To overcome this issue, the lever utilizes the pressure of the hand pushing down against the top of the aluminum can, which eliminates the need for a power source.

I live in the N∞k.

The N∞k is a small space in my dorm hallway originally made for people to quietly study. It was a standard Olin study group location; whiteboard included. But my entire hallway contributed to its renovation into a relaxing hang out location. We removed the intruding table, placed two arm chairs, took out the florescent lights, brought in a standing lamp, moved in side tables, and changed a regular nook into the N∞k. Several of the West Hall 3 North Residents spend a lot of their time here, we even celebrated the holidays in the N∞k by cutting down a Christmas tree in Parcel B.

Being on spring break means that the dining hall is closed. Guess where we have our dinner? In the N∞k, of course! Yesterday I channeled my inner Chinese mother and prepared “hot pot” for several of my friends. Despite the episode of requiring us, engineers, to come up with several creative ways to defrost the meat, it was a delicious meal.

Even tonight, a few of us cooked a simple meal together and sat down after a wonderful, sunny spring day for dinner. It felt so routine, as if we were a family sitting together in the dining room and sharing stories of each of our day over food.

Therefore, it was quite natural for Mary and I to choose the N∞k as our source of inspiration for our second Mech Proto project. We were given the task to make a beautiful wooden box that utilized at least 5 different joining methods and 5 different fasteners.

Planar Mechanisms for ENGR2330 Mech Proto

Assignment: Each individual is to create a mechanism out of laser cut plywood. Our team decided to make all of the mechanisms interact.

Mechtopsy: Food Processor

It’s spring break right now, and I finally have the chance to update on the things I’ve been up to.

Second semester has been treating me brutally, but it’s good to be busy. I’m learning so much from Olin. My favorite class so far is ENGR2330 Introduction to Mechanical Prototyping, a.k.a. Mech Proto. We’ve designed and constructed so many cool things, and most of all, I’m learning the important things about the design and manufacturing process. Starting the first day of class, we were told to take apart a food processor.

We then chose an individual part and were required to CAD it. As a challenge, I chose this pretty motor shaft to CAD.

The most difficult part was not the actual CAD process, but the measuring process.

I thought it was pretty funny having people watch me xerox my part in the machine: “Yeah, I know it’s not paper and won’t lay flat.” Below is a close-up of the ball bearing.

The SolidWorks CAD did not include the wires because I thought it was redundant to do so. The final dimensioned drawing is shown below.

After all of us had our CAD for our individual parts, Aaron, our professor, told us that we had to combine all of our parts together in one assembly. It was extremely difficult since some took better measurements than others. In the end, the lessons learned were definitely centered around CAD and the formalities for ASME drawings, but I definitely learned that working with others for things that require such detail is tiring if there is no established communication.
